| ... I’m interested in the history of the Great Patriotic War. I’d like you to give me some information about the war monuments and events of this war. What monuments to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War are there in the place where you live? What are the famous battles of this war? How is Victory Day celebrated in your country? By the way, I watched an exciting programme on TV last night ... |

Dear Edward,
Thank you for your message. I live in Saint-Petersburg, the former Leningrad, which survived the terrible 900 days of seige during the War. Therefore, there are lots of monuments in my city dedicated to the War but my favourite one is the Monument to the heroic defenders of Leningrad with an underground museum of the Great Patriotic War. I would say that the most famous battles of the War are the battle of Kursk, the battle of Rzhev, the battle of Stalingrad. The Victory Day is a public holiday, with the parade and fireworks and lots of themed events.
What was the programme about? Was it anyhow connected with the Great Patriotic War?
Best wishes,
Dan
